Cardboard is a versatile, sustainable, and affordable material for creating the most delightful items. Honeycomb cardboard adds to this list with a unique combination of additional properties: lightweight and extremely strong.
Honeycomb cardboard is a three-layered type of cardboard, consisting of a bottom and top layer with a honeycomb-structured cardboard filling in between. This unique structure makes the cardboard super strong and gives it a robust appearance.
Where solid cardboard was previously needed for extra stability, honeycomb cardboard has largely taken over this function. The bottom and top layers and the intermediate layer of cardboard in honeycomb structure consist of much less cardboard than solid cardboard. As a result, fewer raw materials are needed, and it is much lighter in weight.
Honeycomb cardboard is often made from recycled materials such as used paper. And when recycled material cannot be used for the cardboard, the new raw materials are at least FSC-certified.
Want to know what we can make with honeycomb cardboard? Our answer is a counter-question: What can't we make? The possibilities are endless. From packaging, displays, and exhibition stands to cabinets, desks, tables, and chairs. Honeycomb cardboard is even used as reinforcement in all kinds of furniture, car and aircraft parts, and walls.
Honeycomb cardboard is available in various thicknesses. Depending on the desired appearance and functionality, Karton Design is happy to advise you on the best thickness of honeycomb cardboard for your application. We have advanced equipment to cut honeycomb cardboard up to 8 centimeters thick. That's truly unique.
If you don't like the rugged look of honeycomb cardboard and/or when the object may come into contact with moisture, we can finish the cardboard with a beautiful graphically printable top layer and/or protective laminate.
We make it sound almost like a magic solution, but honeycomb cardboard also has two disadvantages: it's so sturdy that it's difficult to bend or fold, and it's somewhat thicker than corrugated cardboard, for example. What you often see, therefore, is a combination of both. Honeycomb cardboard as the core, corrugated cardboard around it as a finish.
There are endless examples of items where Karton Design has incorporated honeycomb cardboard. Here's a selection of our projects:
