How strong is cardboard really? Facts and examples

Cardboard: stronger than you think – sustainable and structural design

Cardboard as a building material: strong, sustainable and surprisingly versatile.

A frequently asked question is: can cardboard really withstand impact? Many people associate cardboard with a fragile, temporary and lightweight material. In reality, cardboard increasingly proves itself to be a strong, structural and sustainable material, provided it is designed correctly.

In this blog, we explain how strong cardboard really is, where this strength comes from and how cardboard is successfully used in practice.

How strong is cardboard?

The strength of cardboard lies not only in the material itself, but mainly in its structural design. Through smart folding techniques, multiple layers and the use of honeycomb structures, ribs and tubes, cardboard can carry remarkably high loads.

As with steel or wood, form determines strength. A flat cardboard sheet is relatively vulnerable, while folded, curved or laminated structures become surprisingly stable and rigid. By folding, gluing and designing modular systems, cardboard constructions retain their shape and resist deformation.

In addition, cardboard is very lightweight, meaning it has minimal self-weight. This makes it ideal for large constructions that still need to be easy to transport and assemble.

Structural cardboard in practice

Cardboard has been successfully used in a wide range of projects for many years, including:

  • Cardboard exhibition stands where hundreds of visitors walk by, lean against and interact with the structure every day
  • Cardboard furniture such as chairs, tables and presentation units used intensively over long periods
  • Large cardboard objects and installations, including decorative elements, spatial sculptures and brand presentations

These examples show that cardboard is not only suitable for decorative purposes, but also for load-bearing and functional applications.

Cardboard for temporary and long-term use

Cardboard is often associated with temporary applications such as events and campaigns – and rightly so. However, cardboard is not inherently short-lived.

The lifespan of cardboard depends on:

  • the environment (indoor or outdoor),
  • humidity levels,
  • applied loads,
  • and how it is handled in use.

With the right design choices and protective measures, cardboard can also be used long-term, for example in interiors, showrooms and semi-permanent installations.

Different types of cardboard and material selection

Not all cardboard is the same. There are many different types of cardboard, varying in thickness, composition, flute structure and quality. The internal structure – such as the number of layers, fibre direction and liner combinations – has a major impact on the strength, stability and lifespan of a construction.

That is why we always make a conscious choice for high-quality cardboard in our design process. Depending on the application, load and intended lifespan, we select the cardboard that performs best structurally. This ensures our designs are not only sustainable and visually appealing, but also reliable in use.

A sustainable and circular material

In addition to its strength, cardboard is a sustainable and circular material. It is renewable, recyclable and has a relatively low environmental impact compared to many traditional building materials. Through smart design, a single cardboard construction can serve multiple functions and be easily reused or recycled.

Conclusion: cardboard is stronger than you think

The true strength of cardboard lies in the design. With the right knowledge of structural cardboard, smart folding techniques and experience in design and production, cardboard becomes a reliable, sustainable and surprisingly strong building material.

Cardboard is therefore not just a temporary solution, but a fully-fledged material with great design freedom and future potential.

It's always great to work with Margrieta from Karton Design. Her knowledge and experience are extensive. Compared to others, her quality is much higher. She thinks along well in terms of approach, design, and efficiency, which has a positive effect on the price. Cardboard is such a beautiful and environmentally friendly product.
