Every cardboard project starts with an idea. Sometimes it is a rough concept, sometimes a very specific request. But how do you turn an idea into a strong, functional and sustainable cardboard object?

At Karton Design, we work with a clear and well-considered design process in which creativity and structural expertise come together.

Step 1 – Introduction and briefing

A successful cardboard design starts with a good conversation. During the initial meeting, we discuss topics such as:

• the wishes and objectives of the project
• the desired dimensions
• the function of the object
• the location (indoor, outdoor, trade fair, showroom)
• whether the object should be printed or made from natural cardboard
• the deadline
• the preferred material
• the desired look and brand identity
• and the intended lifespan

What should the object do, and what should it communicate? By clearly defining these points, we lay a strong foundation for a functional and feasible cardboard design.

Step 2 – Creative design

Based on the briefing, we create an initial design in which form, structure and material come together. From the very beginning, we take into account the properties of cardboard as a construction material.

We aim for a balance between aesthetics and structural logic: a design that is visually strong while remaining stable and buildable. This results in a concept that not only looks good, but is also realistically achievable in cardboard.

Step 3 – Technical development and construction

In this phase, the design is technically developed – a crucial step in every cardboard project. We determine, among other things:

• the appropriate type and composition of cardboard
• folding techniques and connections
• load-bearing structures and strength
• and how the individual components are assembled or mounted

Thanks to our experience with structural cardboard, we ensure that the object is strong, stable and durable, tailored to its intended use.

Step 4 – Production of the cardboard object

After the technical development, production begins. The object is manufactured from high-quality cardboard, partly by machine and partly by hand. This combination ensures both precision and attention to detail.

Throughout the production process, we continuously monitor quality to ensure that every cardboard object meets the required standards for strength, finish and appearance.

Step 5 – Delivery and installation

The final result is carefully delivered and, if desired, assembled on location by our team. Whether it is an exhibition stand, piece of furniture, installation or object, we make sure everything is placed correctly and safely.

In this way, an idea ultimately becomes a tangible cardboard object, ready for use.
